CLARK, PHILIPPINES (14 December 2022) — Travel + Leisure Co., the world’s leading membership and leisure travel company, has partnered with the Pag-asa Pawikan Protection and Conservation Center (PPPCC) in Bagac, Bataan to conserve marine turtles in the Philippines.

For its annual “Save the Turtles” project, Travel + Leisure Co. employees have adopted nests in the organization’s turtle hatchery, where each nest has 40-120 eggs.

Over 50 associates from the Travel + Leisure Co. business units in Clark, including Wyndham Destinations and RCI, recently joined the PPPCC’s orientation on turtle protection and the safe releasing of 70 hatchlings to the sea.

Barangay Pag-asa, a laid-back coastal village in Bagac, is known as a breeding ground for turtles, particularly the green, olive ridley, and hawksbill turtles, which are classified as endangered. The PPPCC is a community-based group of volunteers who patrol the shores of Bagac for turtle eggs, protect them from poachers, rescue injured turtles, and provide environmental education to the broader community.

Through the Clark office’s sustainability program WYNDGreen, the company raises awareness among its employees on wildlife and environmental conservation. The team has also collected funds across its offices in Asia Pacific to sponsor 50 turtle nests amounting to PhP 25,000.

“As a leader in the global leisure travel industry, Travel + Leisure Co. proactively contributes to advancing environmental, social, and economic issues at our destinations,” said Gloria Llamas, Director of Operations, Wyndham Services Asia Pacific Philippines Inc. “It is empowering to see our team members actively engage in our environmental advocacy. This has been our third event on turtle conservation, and we have received overwhelming support from our staff, not just from the Philippines but also from our global offices.”

Llamas also shared that the company has granted all staff members a “Wish Day,” a paid day off that they can use for volunteering activities such as this.

“Our top executives based in Australia and Singapore have also adopted the nests and even named them after their loved ones and friends,” added Llamas.

There are seven species of marine turtles in the world, and five can be found in the Philippines. The turtles face challenges not just from their natural predators but also from climate change and plastic pollution.

Aside from the turtle conservation campaign, the company’s WYNDGreen sustainability program also conducts tree planting, school garden and beach cleanups.

Gold Coast, Australia, (4 October 2022)  – Supertee, the charity which gifts a super hero themed medical garment for every child facing a long-term stay in hospital has held its first ever Packing Event in Queensland on the Gold Coast.  At the event, members of the Wishes by Wyndham volunteer committee from hospitality company, Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific packed over 200 garments for children in need. The garments along with notes of encouragement were delivered to children facing long hospital stays at Gold Coast University hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Sydney tradie, Jason Sotiris together with his friend Yusuf Muklis, launched Supertee in 2018 after Jason’s own daughter needed hospital care. Jason found it difficult to dress his one-year old when faced with a tangle of hospital wires and tubes. That was when he came up with Supertee — a superhero-inspired medical garment for children designed to not only raise sick kids’ spirits, but help hospital staff when changing kids.

The capes double as bibs, there are side openings for tubes, access lines and temperature checks, and they are 100 per cent cotton. Since then, more than 13,000 Supertees have made their way to hospitals around Australia to help give already brave kids additional courage. This year, Jason received a call from Disney wanting to collaborate. The partnership will enable the launch of the Supertee Marvel Edition with the release of Captain Marvel and Captain America Supertees. The collaboration has also caught the attention of Chris Hemsworth and Brie Larson who recorded a special video for when children receive their Supertee.

In Quarter 2 and 3 of 2022, with Supertee as its charity of choice, to date, Wishes by Wyndham has raised over $26,000 for the charity through fundraising activities. The money raised will help create 520 new Supertees and distribute them to hospitals across Australia.

“We are grateful to the Wyndham Destinations team and to Club Wyndham South Pacific members for their generosity in supporting Supertee. Our dream is simple — to have a Supertee available for every child that needs one, and with Wyndham’s help we are one step close to that dream,” said Jason Sotiris, Supertee Cofounder.

In the lead up to the Packing Event, Club Wyndham South Pacific members and Wyndham Destinations had the opportunity to donate to the charity and sign personalised cards which were added to Supertee packs. Local Gold Coast mum, Emma Burns also attended the event with daughter Elsie and husband Ben. The family collected a Supertee for Elsie to wear while undergoing chemotherapy.

Every quarter, Wishes by Wyndham, the philanthropic arm of Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific commits to raise funds for a worthy children’s charity. Over 13 years, Wishes by Wyndham has raised close to AU$600,000 for charitable causes, predominantly children in need

“Through Wishes by Wyndham, we aim to support the communities in which we operate. We are thankful to our staff, Club Wyndham South Pacific members and resort guests for helping us raise funds to support the wonderful work being done by Supertee. We were proud to take part in Queensland’s first packing event and help make a difference in children’s lives,” said Bruce Harkness, Senior Vice President Human Resources, Customer Experience and Brand Communications, Wyndham Destinations.

The last two years have been challenging for the global community, and it has been no different for the people of Fiji – who have faced numerous financial pressures and psychological challenges brought about by the impacts of Covid-19.

The opening of Fiji’s international border in December 2021 was met with great excitement as the country’s hoteliers could return to normal operations, and afford to sustainably pay the country’s many hospitality workers once more.

Though the road to recovery will be a long one, the team at Club Wyndham Denarau Island is committed to supporting Fijians in need. Earlier this year, a group of 14 resort staff members formed the
Mai Yaloda, a committee dedicated to supporting the Fijian community through philanthropic causes.

Mai Yaloda can be directly translated as “From the heart” in Fijian. Club Wyndham Denarau Island’s
Mai Yaloda coordinates donations of money, food, school supplies, toys, clothing, good quality furniture, linens and bedding. The committee also assists Club Wyndham members and resort guests with channeling donations to deserving organisations such as orphanages, a women’s shelter, schools, villages, and families in need.

“To raise funds for causes identified by Mai Yaloda, we host different fundraising activities at the resort including the sale of Club Wyndham merchandise. All proceeds from our weekly frog racing event and our Saturday fruit and vegetable market also go to Mai Yaloda causes, along with direct donations made from club members and guests upon check-out. In addition, we have a community chest where club members and guests can place non-perishable food items that they do not use during their stay,” said Neomai Matai, Mai Yaloda Chair and Duty Manager at Club Wyndham Denarau Island.

The Mai Yaloda has completed a number of projects this year, mainly directed to assisting younger Fijians with their studies.

“Affordability of schooling and school supplies was a major community issue that arose following the financial stresses placed on families during 2020 and 2021, explained Mrs Matai.

Initiatives completed by Club Wyndham’s Mai Yaloda this year include:

  • Donation of quality used mattresses to Vaturu District Primary School for boarding students
  • Installment of fans in the classrooms at Vaturu District Primary School
  • Sponsorship for Nawaka District School swim team
  • Sponsorship of Nadi District girls’ rugby team
  • Donations of netball equipment to Nabila District Primary School
  • Donation of rugby balls to Andrews Primary School
  • Donation of quality pillows, bedding and linen to Navunikabi Catholic School in the highlands of Namosi
  • In partnership with Wananavu Plumbing, donation of 30 new desks and chairs for Nabila District Primary School.
  • Monthly donations of food, clothing, stationery and toys to Loloma Home
  • Seedlings donation to Loloma Home
  • Food donation to Dilkusha Girls’ Home
  • Food, clothing, shoes and bedding donations to a family who lost their home to a fire
  • Sponsorship of the Duavata Champs Awareness Marathon
  • Currently Mai Yaloda is coordinating a book and stationary drive at the resort with a target of 1,000 books

“We have an ambitious number of projects we are taking on. The Mai Yaloda team at Club Wyndham Denarau look forward to fulfilling our vision: Working together to provide positive assistance in our community by uplifting lives, caring for the elderly, identifying where genuine help is needed the most and empowering our children to make their dreams come true,” said Mrs Matai.

“In the words of Mother Teresa – ‘We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop was not there, the ocean would be missing something.’ We hope that the drop that we give brings a smile to the faces of the lives we touch.”
